How many people would balk or hesitate when faced with a group of ten people descending upon their home? Then consider that the group includes most stages of development from pre-K through adult! Yeah, me too! But we are making our way across the country and have been welcomed with open arms, warm beds, the occasional pool and tasty food by our family and the military family which has so graciously embraced us throughout our military careers. Friendships which started with kids in the same classes at school; borrowing milk from the neighbor; meeting at church, the gym or work; or those which we’ve sustained from our college years. Friends who, no matter the distance between visits, calls, e-mails open their homes (and washers and dryers!) to the Ten Glens as we make our way throughout much of the country. As a matter of fact, we celebrated our Rebecca’s 20th birthday with friends who were part of so many birthday celebrations in her younger years!
Phase one of our great American adventure is complete. We are in Colorado showing the school age kids their future schools, getting licensed (who knew there could be friendly people at a DMV?), checking on the status of the home we are building and staying and visiting with some more military friends who have become family throughout the years. The greatest part about this big transition from the Army to the “real world” is that we do have friends here who are making this so much easier for us.
To date, we’ve stayed with and/or visited one family member and at least eight military friends, all of whom we consider family. As a matter of fact, we’ve seen four of our children’s godparents (and more to come!)– and it’s amazing to see how these relationships have grown throughout the years.
We next head out to Arizona with stops at Four Corners and an overnight stay at a La Quinta in New Mexico. We’ll let you know if they earn “big bite” status like the one in Mississippi! My sister will let us hang out in her cabin in AZ for a few days of R&R. We’ll also check out the Painted Desert, the Petrified Forest and the Grand Canyon before we head to yet another La Quinta Inns & Suites in Utah.
