Treats without the Tricks: Clean Candy Options for Halloween

Fall marks the beginning of the end for me in terms of my eating habits. Bathing suits are stowed away in the back- the waaaaay back- of my closet and my leggings, boots, and scarves make their way to the front. Pumpkin spice lattes, football parties, and all the holidays that follow make it very difficult to keep myself motivated to eat healthy. I just can’t resist all these amazing treats like 27-layer dip and caramel apple nachos that my friends, neighbors, and family are all making thanks to Pinterest.

Nonetheless, I still try to find ways to sneak in healthier options when I get the chance. Halloween is the first “big” holiday of the season so I decided to make a conscience effort to choose something other than Red Dye #8 to hand out to all the little tricker-treaters this year. And who am I kidding? We all know that whatever candy you buy will inevitably have to be bought again two days before Halloween because your family ate it all, so you might as well by the healthier candy to start.

If we are being honest, though, there is no “healthy” candy. And unless you live in a close-knit neighborhood, making better-for-you treats isn’t really an option either since most parents won’t let their kids eat homemade goodies anymore. Below I have listed some store bought treats as well as some other neat handouts you can give the kids in your neighborhood!

  • Fruit leathers like these Stretch Island Fruit Company ones
  • Microwavable popcorn
  • Pumpkin scented playdough
  • All-natural or 100% juice boxes- because who doesn’t get thirsty with all that walking around?!
  • Glowsticks
  • UNREAL candy- no GMO’s, no corn syrup- just 100% all natural products for this very real candy. And you can find it at regular stores like Target and some grocery stores !

If you’re still stuck on buying the good ol’ stuff like Snickers and Milky Ways, consider making a change to your Halloween routine by letting your kids choose a few pieces to save for themselves, and give the rest to the Switch Witch or donate your candy to the troops.  And try to wait until a few days before Halloween to stock up on the candy…
