This Marine wife just broke Facebook with her humorous take on military life

Dependa. It’s a divisive term in the military community. Everyone has opinions on it. No one really chooses to call themselves that.

And that’s exactly why Kourtne Bradshaw, the military spouse behind The Honest Dependa videos, did. “I chose the name to poke fun at the stereotype. Not everyone is a dependa; not everyone is that type of stereotype.”

Bradshaw uses a SnapChat filter to distort her face and voice, resulting in a comical, Alvin-and-the-Chimpmunks-esque delivery. Her first video went live three days ago. As of this morning, she had more than 22,000 likes on Facebook, with some of her videos topping more than half a million views. “I’m pretty shocked, to be honest,” Bradshaw said in an interview with MilitaryOneClick. “I did not expect any of this to happen.”

Becoming a viral sensation in the military community must be at least a little strange for the person behind The Honest Dependa. She was begged by family members to join SnapChat, but she resisted, not wanting to put too much time into social media. Her family wore her down with pictures of her nephews and nieces. . . and she joined. When she did, “a lightbulb went off. I thought, How funny would it be if I did little skits of what every day life for military spouses is like?

The first video was produced with just her family in mind as the audience. After seeing it, they convinced her to make the videos public, and “it spread like wildfire.” She began receiving a lot of personal friend requests and created a Facebook page just for The Honest Dependa at her sister’s urging.

The reaction from the military community has been overwhelming. While she’s had a few trolls show up (“One lady tried to say I’m kind of making a bad name for military spouses.”), the response has been almost entirely positive. Besides public comments, Bradshaw has received private messages from military spouses, veterans, and active duty military, thanking her for her humor.

Seeing humor in difficult or frustrations is something that Bradshaw tries to do in her real life; however, she cautions that she is not The Honest Dependa. “I just play a funny character in the videos, but I’m not really that person. I’m a completely different person.”

Using her personal experiences in the military community and the suggestions of her viewers, Bradshaw notes that she’s only just started: “I have more videos coming, more topics are coming.” But it’s all in good fun. As a Marine wife of eight years, she’s quick to point out that “the military life has been really fair to us.” In fact, her husband is currently in the process of reenlisting.

For fans of The Honest Dependa, that means more material. The whole experience of going viral has been a ride that Bradshaw is still navigating: “I don’t know exactly what to make of it just yet, but I guess I’m going to just go with the flow.”

  1. I do enjoy the few videos she’s posted. It’s very relatable as a military wife. I’ve either personally felt that way about others or even myself. Especially the commissary video… unfortunately that is my true story!!!! You rock girl!!

  2. I find it as a way to laugh and ease some of my fears as I’m marrying my soldier this summer and it’s a big step and change to me. I’ve heard so many horror stories about being a milso.

  3. I as a Mom enjoy the videos as my son is going to be gone 1 year (Japan ) I too have those days when I need a good laugh. THANKS,KB

  4. I so love the laundry one!! She should do one all dressed up ready to pick the hubs up from deployment and she gets a call that they are stuck in Spain. 🙂

    1. That’s what happened to me on the way back from deployment. My (ex) husband was ready to pick me up and we had a problem w/ our plane and had to stay the night in Prauge, Czech Republic. Lol.

  5. Thanks for making these videos. While I have never been the spouse of active military, my husband is an Army Veteran & my daughter is an Army wife. These videos help me to better understand some of the frustrations she has voiced.

  6. I’m seriously dying rolling on the floor. Bc it’s all so true. Every bit of it. Thank you for these videos!!!!😂😂😂😂😂

  8. Thank you thank you for the honesty. I spent 25 years as a spouse to an Air Force NCO. From 1974 through 1999. Things sound pretty much the same! You’re awesome!

  9. Military mom here! I choked from laughing so hard at your skits. My daughter n law snap chats me and it’s like deja vu when I see yours minus the chipmunk voice and big eyes. Keep them coming. We all need a good laugh about reality in the military as mom’s, spouses, family in general through this journey. Thank you

  10. LOVE the videos. They made me laugh. Keep up the good work! Venture out to cover other areas like moving, new school, traveling the world. I also think that some can learn a LOT from your videos. 🙂

  11. Love her videos. Former Marine here and I still live in the Marine town that I was stationed in. So I see this LITERALLY every day. Keep them coming!

  12. I haven’t watched but two videos so far, but I can relate to some. My husband was in the Military for 21 years . I remamber when his unit was waiting to be deployed to the Persian Gulf. Three false starts later, us wives were like.. Go Already!!

  13. I think she’s spot on. Who ever thinks she is giving military spouses a bad name is probably one of the military spouses she’s referring to.

  14. She should do one about spouses wearing their husbands uniforms/covers for photos…tacky & typical dependa move.

  15. My son, who is Army, just showed me your videos. Oh lordy girl! My husband, who passed away 2 years ago, was Air Force 23 years. SPOT ON!!! Keep them coming. It feels so good to laugh again!

  16. My daughter is married to a marine. She posted The Honest Dependa videos to her facebook page. I watched on video, and I was hooked! These videos are hilarious! I look forward to seeing more of them. 🙂
