PCSing To Germany?

Bobbi and Son Walking over AlligatorsNew Four-Legged Military Kiddos Fees Are Coming.

Thank you to Bobbi Pack from MyMilitarySavings for this great PCS pet information!

Are you PCSing to Germany? Do you have four-legged military brats you need to bring with you? According to www.eur.army.mil when a service member and their four-legged friend arrive in Germany for assignment they will be charged a fee by German authorities beginning February 1, 2013.

Bobbi PuppyIt is said that the fee will be charged when the service member arrives at Ramstein Air Base and Frankfurt International Airport. The fee of €55 per pet will be charged on all pets imported into Germany from outside the European Union. The fee is designed to help prevent the introduction and dissemination of rabies, according to Kaiserslautern County officials.

All four-legged military brats will undergo an examination by veterinary officials near the passenger baggage claim area and all fees must be paid through credit card only. Service members arriving at Frankfurt International Airport will also be expected to undergo the same procedures. However, the fee at this airport is €35-accompanied pet, €55-unaccompanied pet and the fees increase by 50% if the pet arrives on the weekend/holiday.

All of these fees are 100% the responsibility of the service member and are not reimbursable by a travel voucher according to officials with the U.S. Army. However, the fees may be reimbursable through the DoD Joint Travel Regulations being deducted as a moving expense on the service member’s federal income tax returns.

So, if you think you may be PSCing to Germany after February 1, 2013 you may need to budget for this new change. I know it does not appear to be a large amount of money, but when you are PCSing any and all money you can save is a must.

What are your thoughts on these new pet fees?
