Trump tags first non-vet to head VA

During his first press conference as President-Elect, Donald Trump announced that Dr. David Shulkin is his pick for Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Shulkin is currently the Under Secretary for Health for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. If confirmed, Shulkin will be the first non-veteran to serve in the position.

Before his role as the Under Secretary, Shulkin was the executive of numerous health care organizations including Morristown Medical Center and the Atlantic Health System Accountable Care Organization. As a physician, he was in positions of leadership at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University Hospital, and Medical College of Pennsylvania of Pennsylvania Hospital. He taught at Drexel University School of Medicine and is the founder of DoctorQuality.

Robert McDonald is the current Secretary of Veterans Affairs, and last month 20 veterans organizations made headlines with an open letter asking the president-elect to allow McDonald to continue in his position.

Pundits have expressed surprise at Trump’s selection of Shulkin among other candidates who included Fox News host Pete Hegseth, Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, and Navy Admiral Michelle Howard.
