After a 10-month deployment, successful family reunion, and a long drawn-out household goods shipping process it was time to plan the PCS route and family vacation.
This PCS was going to be very unique because we were heading to Hawaii from California. We were moving to Hawaii for three years on Permanent Change of Station military orders. Since we’ll be away from the USA mainland for three years, we thought it would be a good time to take a west coast family road trip before choosing to stay island bound.
Naturally, we looked on www.militaryoneclick.com to see what deals and tools we could use. If you haven’t yet seen all the ways to use MOC for this type of thing, I highly recommend it (not just because I work there, either).
There are so many resources for discounted military travel that helped me during my trip research.
I ended up choosing La Quinta Inns & Suites because I was impressed by their large selection of hotel properties and amenities like free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, swimming pool for the children to burn off energy, and the La Quinta Returns Military Rewards Program. Their site – www.lq.com – even has a trip-planning tool. I was able to compare different routes based on destinations and attractions my family wanted to see during our vacation.
It was simple to sign up for the Military Rewards Program via lq.com/military. Did you know that you can get free upgrades, a military discount on the best available rate, start at a higher point level to earn free night stays, and they recognize your family for service in the military?
They even have a LQ mobile app. Now I can view all of my reservations from the front seat of my minivan, make last minute changes due to unforeseen circumstances, and find out when our room is ready in each of our hotels.
We are looking forward to our scenic drive through the Colorado National Monument in Grand Junction, Colorado. My family is excited to experience the Canyon Lands and Arches in the vicinity of Moab, Utah. The last stop on the family road trip will be in St. George, Utah with the famous Zion National Park where we will hike.
My kids are very excited about the PCS family vacation. The hiking in 100+ degree heat is not top on their list, but hotel hopping and the adventure of the unknown is keeping them going. I keep reminding myself, through the very loud talking and never ending questions, that my husband and I are helping them make lifelong memories through this forced family fun!
